Carpet Cleaning

One of the best things about this house we are renting is that there is no carpet.  In fact, I think I have only used my vacuum a couple of times since we've moved in.  I realized that it is easier to sweep the one area rug we have in the living room than it is to drag out the vacuum for just that.

When we moved out of our last apartment, I really wanted to clean the rugs because they were horrible.  Actually, they were horrible when we moved in, too.  It was easy to look into cheap carpet cleaning austin and read some carpet cleaners reviews austin to find the best carpet steam cleaner austin, but I live in South Carolina, so that didn't help me.   I had to find a local carpet cleaning company, and they came out and cleaned the carpets when we moved in.  Junior was so dissatisfied with out property manager when we left that he refused to have the carpet cleaners come back out before we moved.  I did, however, look online for carpet cleaning tips to do it myself, but Junior put a stop to that, too.  Looking back, I'm glad we didn't clean them because the management company kept our deposit, even though we moved out because the ceiling in the kitchen was falling in.

That is why we refuse to rent from another management agency.

Happy Halloween!

We decided to go trick or treating tonight, and found a couple of neighborhoods that were giving out candy.  The rest of the county will be giving it out tomorrow, so my kids lucked into two nights of Halloween.  They got tons of candy tonight, so I'm not even sure they need more, but it will be fun.  We are going with my mom and sister (and my niece and nephew) tomorrow, so that will be fun.
Brandi gave up the witch costume in favor of last years pink fairy costume.  Kasi did the witch thing.  They both wanted glittery make-up, and I think they looked awesome!

Appliances

I have black appliances in my kitchen.  We bought them before all the stainless appliances became popular.  I like that I can just wipe my stove down with hot soapy water and not have to use stainless steel cleaner.  Although, I think if my appliances were to give out, I would probably buy stainless to replace them.   I really do like the way they look.  Very modern.

Healthy Eating Habits

I have been dieting for most of my adult life.  So far, nothing has "stuck".  I can lose a little weight, but it always seems to find me again.  I am tired of doing the yo-yo thing and am looking for a way to change the way I eat for good.  I want to educate myself on making healthier choices, instead of dieting all the time.  I don't want to starve myself anymore.  I don't want to deny myself the foods I love.  I want to feel better about myself, on the inside as well as the outside.  I want to learn Healthy Eating Habits so that I can live long enough to hold my great-grandchildren.

I was browsing this site called http://www.EverydayHealthGirl.com and found Becki. She shares her story of healthy eating, and how to do so frugally. (If you sign up for the newsletter, you will get a free healthy eating guide) I think this is where I struggle the most.  It is so much cheaper to buy the bad for you foods than it is to buy the good for you ones.  For people like me, sometimes having pasta five nights a week is the only option.  Or so I thought.  If I can learn how to spend the same amount of money on better for me foods, well, I'm all for that.  I want my whole family to start eating better, because I know the example I set can mold how they look at food for the rest of their lives.

That's a pretty big responsibility, and up until now I think I might have been leading them down the wrong path.  But, I have learned that it is never too late to get on the right track.  And that is exactly what I intend to do.

Keeping Track

Tomorrow is Halloween, and there has been a lot of debate around here as to when the kids should trick or treat.  In South Carolina, most people go to church on Sunday nights, so a lot of houses will not be handing out candy that night.  In the past, this has lead to parents taking their kids out tonight instead.  This year, the media is encouraging people to go out on Sunday, but I have been hearing talk about both nights.  Confused?  Yeah, me too.

We plan on going out tomorrow night with my sister and my mom, but my girls are wanting to walk around our neighborhood tonight.  I plan on staying home, and handing out candy to anyone who comes by.  This will be the first time I let them go out alone, and if I was thinking ahead, I would have looked into gps for rent.  This sounds like a really cool idea for keeping track of your car, or in my case, your kids.  All you have to do is set up the area by charging the unit for four house, and then driving around your area for twenty minutes.   Then just put the GPS on what, or who, you want to track, and you can keep track of it.  Simply, right?

Using on of these on my girls certainly would have taken a little bit of worry off my mind tonight.

Let's Help Dannon Reach Their Goal

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  I am sure everyone has noticed all the pink everywhere.  The stores around her go crazy with it, selling everything from clothes to kitchen gadgets; all pink.  Brandi has been in heaven, because pink is her favorite color.

I am also sure that all of us have a personal connection to breast cancer.  For me, it was my Grandmother and my favorite Aunt.  They both beat the disease and are living full, happy lives.  I also had my own breast cancer scare a couple of years ago, and when I say scare, let me just say that I have never been so scared in my life.  But, thanks to a free mammogram and lots of good doctors, I was told that it wasn't cancer.  I did end up having a breast reduction at that time, which was a huge blessing.

Did you know that 290,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year?  That is a staggering number.  I am sure a percentage of those women are like me, without health insurance, so short on options.  Free mammograms can help so many women who wouldn't otherwise have access to this test.  Dannon is going to help some of these women, and we can help Dannon do just that.

I am sure by now we have all seen the pink topped yogurts.  Under those pink lids is a code.  Simply go to Cups Of Hope and enter the code to help Dannon reach their pledge of donating $500,000 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. ®.  All the money donated will go towards providing free mammograms and supporting breast cancer research.  They are hoping to raise and donate even more money ($1.5 million) this year than they have pledged.

You can enter the codes until the end of November, so don't think that just because October is coming to a close that we should no longer think about breast cancer.  I think about it all the time, and worry about my daughters.  Don't you?

"I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by  Mom Central on behalf of Dannon. In addition, I received a gift certificate and products to thank me for taking the time to participate."

Who Hosts You?

I got another email today inviting me to a web seminar about finding my "brand".  One of these days I am going to listen to one of these things so I can find out exactly what they are talking about. I mean, I am not in this blogging thing to make a million dollars.  I am not trying to be the next Bloggess.  I don't care if I get one comment or one hundred comments on a single post.  Okay, maybe that one is a lie.  We all like comments.  It makes me happy when people leave me comments, even though I am a horrible commenter myself.  I try, though.  Really I do.

Anyway, I see posts all the time about how to "make your blog better".  Apparently it matters what blog web host you use, and whether or not you pay for monthly hosting.  I have been using Blogger almost since I began blogging, and I have never had an issue.   I have my own domain names, but I still host my blogs through them.  I have no desire to change that simply because someone thinks I should.

If I ever start another blog, which we all know could happen at any moment, I may look into something different, just to see what people are talking about.  For now, though, i am leaving this blog alone.

Carmex Review & Giveaway

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Carmex®. All opinions are 100% mine.

It is that time of year again when my hands start to get all dry and cracked.  I blame the cold weather when we walk to the bus stop in the mornings.  Right around my thumbs, the skin on the back of my hands was getting really rough and cracked.  I knew I needed to find a lotion that would heal that skin before the really cold weather hit.

I received some samples of Carmex® Healing Lotion and Carmex® Healing Cream from IZEA, and let me tell you, within days of using the Healing Lotion I could tell a difference in my skin.  I know what you are thinking; that there is no way that a lotion could make a difference that fast.  Let me assure you that it did.  The lotion itself is really creamy, and it blends into the skin well.  It doesn't leave behind that greasy feeling that other lotions do.

The thing I liked the best, though, is the smell.  I can't even find the words to describe it, other than that it smells fresh and reminds me of the way my Cabbage Patch Doll smelled when I first got her.  Weird, I know.  The scent also stays on your skin long after you applied the lotion.

I am looking forward to seeing how well my hands stand up this Winter while using this product.  You can see, too, by entering to win a 1 ounce sample of the Healing Lotion for yourself.  All you have to do is go to the Carmex website, look around a bit, then come back and leave a comment on this post telling me something interesting you discovered about the lotion.  After doing this, you can earn extra entries (1 each) by following me twitter or "liking" this blog on Facebook.

This contest is for US residents only (sorry) and will end at 11:59pm on Sunday, November 7, 2010. Good Luck!

Girl's Day Of Reading

Yesterday at Brandi's school, they had a reading day dedicated to girls.  As most of you know, she is in an all girls class, and she loves it.  If you follow me on Facebook or read any of my other blogs, you know that I had a conference with her teacher on Monday to get her report card.  She did amazing, of course.  She is testing at a 5th/6th grade level, and she's only in 3rd grade.  She loves school, and was so excited yesterday, because the teachers promised the girls that Taylor Swift was going to read to them, live on television.  I am not sure exactly what it was, but Brandi came home and said that Taylor Swift just answered a lot of questions from the audience, and then sang Mine.  I don't think it was live...it sounds like an interview or something.  Either way, all the girls loved it.

This week is also book fair.  I sent money with Boo on Tuesday to buy Ramona & Beezus.  (the one that has picture sin it from the movie with Selena Gomez, her favorite actress) Yesterday, during girls day, they did a bunch of giveaways where they gave out a ton of books. and Brandi's name was called.  She was able to go up on stage and pick any book she wanted out of a huge selection.  She came home with a craft book.  I asked her why she picked that, and she said that she already had all the other books.

That's right.  we have so many books around here, we outdid the book fair!  Gotta love it.

Going Trick or Treating

Contributed by Milford Woods

For Halloween this year, my two youngest children will be dressing up to go trick or treating. They are so excited about it. My oldest daughter, who is twelve, thinks she is too old to go trick or treating. She will probably end up dressing up as something but she doesn't want to admit it now. I have two sons. One of them will be three in December. The other one is eighteen months. My older son is excited about being able to dress up like a horse. The other one doesn't really understand Halloween yet. He is going to be a lion.

We live in a small town and will just be going trick or treating around our home town. Afterwards, we will go to their Grandparents house because they always make up a special bag for the grandkids. It will be so much fun especially if the weather is nice. Both of my boys will have warm costumes just in case it will be cold on Halloween night. When we get home, I will go through the trick or treat bags to check all of the candy. After that, we will sit down to watch our directtv for added excitement to the evening.

Send Your Child A FREE Halloween Call - Check Out Santa Claus Greetings Too!

This is pretty cute.  You can send FREE Halloween Calls and Greeting Cards, Birthday cards and Ecards with music delivered to your phone.  They can be personalized, and I listened to a few of them, and I think my youngest would love it.  I am seriously thinking about having Santa call her.  At almost 9, I know the magic of believing will soon be ending, so I want to make it as special as I can for her this year.

Halloween ~ The Ultimate Scary Movie

Kasi has been on a mission for the past few weeks.  I made the mistake of telling her that the original Halloween is the scariest movie I have ever seen, and I refuse to watch it.  She took this as a challenge to look through Free Online Movies and try and find Halloween so that we can watch it together.  Because that is what we do.  We watch scary movies together, and I can't let her down.  I will have to suck it up and watch the movie.  And then have nightmares for a month.

We have yet to Watch Free Movies online.  We always rent them from my cable company. It will be interesting to sit in bed and watch Halloween on Ryan's laptop, but I guess we'll have to.  This particular movie is not available on demand.  I guess being about to See Movies Online is going to give Kasi the opportunity to scare me.

A Mouse In The House

Last Friday, Ryan had a friend come over early for his party.  This kid is really sweet, and he's funny.  So when we were sitting in the living room and he said he saw a mouse run from under my desk to under the bookshelf, I thought he was kidding.  He insisted that he really saw a mouse, but I didn't believe him.

Fast forward to Monday morning.  Junior calls me around 6am (which is weird) to tell me that when he was getting ready to go to work that morning, he saw a mouse in the house.  He said it was sitting on it's back legs (you know how mice sit...well, at least I see the hamsters do that pose) just staring at him.  he said he walked right up to it, and it didn't move at all.  It just stood there staring at him.

I asked if he shooed it out of the house, and he said no.  He went to work, leaving it sitting in my living room.  Am I the only one who thinks that was just plain wrong?  He justifies it by saying that the mouse looked really sweet.  Okay, whatever.  He's just lucky I haven't seen the little guy.  We went to the store Monday night to get a trap, but I want one that will catch him alive so that we can release him in the woods.  Unfortunately, those traps are more expensive than the snap traps, so we will have to wait until Friday to get one.

Let's all just hope I don't run into the little guy before than.

She Needs Internet!

I hate talking on the telephone.  I always have.  If I have to make a phone call, I dread the small talk.  I just want to tell you what I have to say and be done with it.  This doesn't make me a very good friend, but I'm okay with that.  And so are my friends.

One of my favorite people in the world is just like me.  She doesn't like the phone.  The only problem is that she doesn't have internet at her house, so it makes it hard to keep in touch.  You all know that I am always sitting at this computer, trying to keep these blogs going.  Okay, so maybe there is a little Facebook thrown in too, but every working girls needs a break now and then.  Right?  RIGHT?

Anyway, the reason my friend doesn't have internet it that the cable companies don't run lines out to her house, and every time she has tried to get it through the phone, the reception is horrible because she lives in the middle of nowhere.  I was telling her the other night at Ryan's party that she needs to look into hughsnet.  They are one of those satellite internet providers,   This would be perfect for her, because even living in the middle of nowhere you can get satellite reception.  Going to the library once a week to get online just doesn't work well, and I miss talking to her.

Well, if you consider Facebook messaging and IM-ing talking.

Parenthood And Dexter

Parenthood.  A show about four siblings raising their kids, and the relationships that happen along the way.

Dexter.  A show about a forensics expert who secretly kill people.

You wouldn't think that these two shows would have anything in common.  But they do.  And the thing they have in common is keeping me from watching one of them, even though I really liked this show in the past.  Thoroughly confused?  Okay, check this out:
An innocent picture of Parenthood co-stars Peter Krause and Lauren Graham.  Did you know they are dating in real life?  Yeah, after I found out that juicy little tidbit, I couldn't watch the show anymore.  I tried, and it was the episode where she goes to work for his company, but to me, it's just weird to watch them play siblings on television knowing they are dating in real life.  Every time they looked at each other on screen, I was a little creeped out.  Weird, yes.  I know.  But that's me.

Did you also know that Dexter siblings, Dexter and Debra Morgan are really married in real life?
That's right.  Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are a real life married couple.  I thought this would weird me out, too, but it doesn't.  I think because I have been watching this show since it started, and I seriously love it, it's not an issue for me.  Sure, there are hugs that look a little more "loving" than "sibling-y" (yes, I just made up that word) but not enough to push me away.

I was trying to think of more celebrity couples who play siblings, but I'm coming up black.  Do you know of any, and does it affect your watching their shows?

Glasses

Yesterday, I was at the pharmacy with Junior and the kids waiting on a prescription.  I will never understand why pharmacies make you wait so long.  If they tell you your medicine will be ready at a certain time, it should be ready at that time.  If they are busy, then they should compensate for that by giving us a later pick up time.

As we were waiting yesterday, the girls started trying on those glasses that most pharmacies have on display.  You know the ones that are a certain magnification?  I have to admit that they both looked pretty silly trying on the adult frames.  They talked me into trying some of the glasses on, too, and I was shocked when I noticed the price on them.  They were almost as expensive as prescription eyeglasses.  In fact, I know that I can buy glasses online that are cheaper than those.   Cuter ones, too.

I am hoping that the kids can make it through school without vision problems so that I don't have to worry about the cost of eyeglasses.  Ryan had slight vision issues a few years ago, but he hasn't worn his glasses in a while.  He only needed them to see the board at school, but he hated them.  So, instead of wearing them, he just sits closer to the front of the glass.  I don't care if he wears them or not, as long as he is not having issues at school.

Shout ~ Go Play!

I remember when I was a kid, my mom would always tell us to "go play".  That usually meant get outside and stay outside until she told us it was time to come in.  Back then, parents didn't have to worry about us kids as much as today's parents worry about their kids.  We would run around the neighborhood, hang out at our friends houses, and most of the time, our parents weren't exactly sure where we were.  But, we always ended up safe at home by the end of the day.  And it was fun!

I find myself telling my kids to "go play", but they don't have the freedom that I did.  They are restricted to our yard, unless I know exactly where they are going to be.  That doesn't mean that they don't know how to play.  Yesterday, my kids were outside with a couple of the neighborhood kids, and they were playing hard.  I could hear them laughing and screaming as they made up games and enjoyed the beautiful Fall weather.

A couple of weeks ago, Growing Tree Toys (the people who sell the best learning toys) asked me to review some Shout products, and to let my readers know about the Shout Go Play initiative.  Simply put, this is an initiative to help parents encourage their kids to play.

Along with the Shout products, I also received a deck of 52 Nature Activities Cards, each one having an activity on it that kids can do outside.  The kids and I have done a bunch of the cards recently, and they were pretty fun activities.  One of the cards said to sit quietly and just listen to the sounds around you.  Then describe what you are hearing to your friends, and have them guess what you are describing.  Another card said to find a rainbow in nature, and the kids had a ball finding all the different colors.  Their favorite so far, though, was the card that said to write their names using objects found in nature, like sticks and rocks.  I wish I had remembered to take a picture of what Brandi created.

After my kids get done playing outside, they always come in covered in dirt.  Seriously, I have no idea how they get so dirty!  Luckily, I was able to put the Shout products I received to the test.

The first product I used was the Shout Color Catcher sheets.  I simply threw one in the washer when I started a load, and it "catches" all the colors that bleed into the water, stopping them from depositing on the other clothes in the load.  Now, I will admit, that I am not very good at separating the laundry before I wash it.  I have two piles; clothes and towels.  I am bad about washing my whites with my colors, so these sheets are perfect for me.

The next product I tried was the Shout Stain Remover Spray.  Ryan had some grass stains on the knees of his jeans from playing football with the neighborhood kids.  These were his play jeans (I have "school clothes" and "play clothes" for my kids) but I still want him to have the best looking clothes, no matter what he is doing.  The Shout Spray took out the stain, and left his jeans looking great.  I am looking forward to seeing what other messes my kids will get into so I can use the spray more often.

My favorite product, though, is the Shout Advanced Ultra Concentrated Gel because it is fun to use.  Laundry itself is not a fun activity, so anything that can make it more enjoyable is awesome in my book.  I love the way you squeeze out the gel, and then use the little brush to work the gel into the stain.  I used this on a pair of my pants that had a little grease stain on them from riding in my friends truck.  I simply used the gel, then washed the pants like I normally do after letting the gel sit for five minutes.  When the pants came out of the dryer, you couldn't tell where the stain had been.

After seeing what these products can do, I can now encourage my kids to not only go play, but to get dirty, knowing that whatever they get into, Shout can get it out.

***I received these products free from Shout to facilitate my review.  No other compensation was given.

Kaplan's Online Learning Program

A few weeks ago, I was thrilled to learn that Brandi and I were going to be participating in a free trial of Kaplan's Online Learning Program, thanks to Mom Central.  When I first heard about this program, I knew that Brandi would benefit from it.  She is a super smart little girl, who is in three different advanced classes in school.  One is for reading, where she is reading a 5th grade book (she is in third grade), one is for math, and the last is a gifted/talented program that meets once a week to challenge the kids who participate.  With all of this going on with her, she still gets bored with her school work.

Kaplan is geared towards helping kids develop the skills they are having issues with.  From what I understand of the program, if Brandi struggles with a certain skill, the program will help her understand it by spending time on it.  If Brandi excels at a skill, the program will challenge her.  She started the program by taking the assessment tests (one in math and one in reading) on October 14, and has since moved on to the program itself.  Here is a glimpse of one of the stories she is reading:
Brandi also loves doing math.  She struggled a little on some of the initial assessment questions, but I just checked her progress and she is already doing some 4th grade skills.  Not bad for my little smarty pants.

We are going to be using this program for eight weeks, and I am excited to see where she ends up.  I will be sharing the results with all of you, of course.  I mean, it's a parents right to brag about how awesome her kids are, right?

"I wrote this review while participating in a Test Drive Program by Mom Central on behalf of Kaplan and received the products necessary to  facilitate my review. In addition, I received a gift certificate to thank me  for taking the time to participate."

Three Shots

I took a lot of pictures before the party of the food and Brandi and I in our costumes.  During the party, I took, um, about ten pictures.  I was so busy enjoying myself, I forgot all about my camera.  As you can see in these three shots, the kids had as much fun as I did.

Here's Brandi, taking a swing at the pinata.

Here's Kasi, after bobbing for apples.
And my son, acting like a goober, as we were singing happy birthday to him.

Save Money On Coffee

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Nestle Dolce Gusto. All opinions are 100% mine.

How many times do you stop at the local coffee shop for a nice cup of iced cappuccino or a latte?  I am not a coffee drinker myself, but I have friends who pay more than five dollars every day for a cup of gourmet coffee.  I have got to tell them that they could save so much money by brewing their favorite coffee at home.

The NESCAFE Dolce Gusto machine can make many different kinds of coffee.  This machine can make hot or cold coffee, which is pretty cool.  My mom loves iced coffees, so I am pretty sure she would love this coffee maker.  It uses those little capsules of coffee and brews one cup at a time.  It can make Caffe Lungo, Espresso, Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato, Mocha, Caffe Americano, Iced Cappuccino and even hot chocolate.  It has a lever that can customize froth, heat, and strength of your coffee.  It sounds pretty cool to me, but don't take my word for it.  Divine.ca has reviews from 50 people who have tried out this coffee maker, and all but a few of the reviews rave about it.

I can only assume that making coffee at home with this coffee maker is cheaper than shelling out $5 a day for a single cup.

Why I Love Entrecard

1.  I have made many new friends who have become regular readers of my blog.

2. I have found lots of great blogs that I wouldn't have otherwise found.

3. I have increased the visitors to my blog.

4. When people drop on my blog, my Alexa rating goes down. (which I am told is a good thing)

5. When I comment on other peoples blogs, my comments increase, too.

6. They have awesome contests like this one where I can win 5000 credits just for blogging about them.

Those are only a few of the reasons why I love entrecard.  I have been using entrecard on this blog for a couple of years now, and I have pretty much been in the top three for most of that time.  Occasionally, I get the top spot, but it is really hard to get ahead of Random Ramblings. (love ya Kloggers/Polly!)  I drop 300 cards from this blog every single day.  If I do it early in the day, and don't comment at all on people's blogs, it takes me about an hour and a half.  If I drop later in the day and take the time to comment, it could take me almost 3 hours to get my drops done.  I usually break it up throughout the day, though, so it's not so bad.

A couple of weeks ago I reported my first site (I was  dropping and all of a sudden I had a full out porn site on my computer) and within a few hours, I received an email saying the site was removed form entrecard.  I was very impressed with their quick response.

If you are looking for a way to get your blog more traffic, check out entrecard.  It is free to join, and if you put in the time to drop, you can really reap the benefits.  I have never bought credits (though they do have that option) but I always have enough credits to advertise on at least one entrecard blog a day.  Most days I have my card on two or three different blogs.

If you decide to sign up, let me know.  I would love to be one of your first advertisers.

PuffPACS ~ A Review

Are you looking for a creative way to give that special someone a gift?  My son's birthday is coming up, and last night we had his party.  I was so excited to give him his gift, because I wrapped it using a PuffPAC.  You want to know what that is, right?

As you can see in the picture, it is a type of mylar balloon that you can put a gift inside.  One end of the balloon is open, and you can stick the gift inside and then seal the end using an iron.  Then you insert a straw into the other end, and after you blow it up and remove the straw, the balloon is sealed.  The recipient gets to pop the balloon to get their gift.

I was sent that exact balloon in the picture to try out, and it was fun to use.  I wish I had remembered to take a picture of it, but I was so excited for Ryan to open it, I forgot.  I have another one that I am going to save for Christmas (it is stocking shaped) so hopefully I will remember to take a picture of that one.

You can check out the entire selection of Wrap-It products and see for yourself how cool they are. You can even try one out for yourself.  I am giving away a PuffPAC to one lucky winner.  Just do one of the following to enter:

"like" my blog on facebook
 and/or
follow me on twitter

Just leave me a comment letting me know which way you have entered.  This contest will run for one week, ending at 11:59pm on Halloween, October 31, 2010.  This contest is open to US residents only. Good Luck!

Personalized Labels

Brandi came home from school on the first day with a refillable water bottle.  She said every kid in her class found one on her desk as a gift from the teacher.  Each water bottle had the girl's name on it, written in permanent marker.

After a few trips through the dishwasher, Brandi's name was gone.  We tried writing it again, and every time we did, it would be gone again within a week.  Then I had the opportunity to review Oliver's labels, and I knew exactly how we would put them to the test.

These labels can be printed with your child's name, and they are "dishwasher & laundry safe and will never fade, scuff or peel". I will admit to being a little skeptical.  I was sure that after a few cycles through the dishwasher the label would be peeling up at the corners.  I was pleasantly surprised when after a weeks worth of washing, the label looks exactly like it did when I put it on the water bottle.

I also put one on her lunchbox and book bag.  Both of those are in perfect condition, too.  It was difficult for Brandi to pick a "theme" because they had so many cute designs, but she finally decided on the flowers.  I think these labels would be perfect for mom's of babies, too.  My sister sends her kids to daycare, and has to make sure that their names are on all bottles and sippy cups.  These labels would be perfect for that.

Now that the weather is getting cold, Brandi is going to start wearing her winter coat to school.  I am going to put a label in that, too.  I'll make sure and let you know how it holds up in the laundry.

I am a work from home mom, or at least that is what I consider myself.  I don't make a lot of money, but I make enough to justify my staying home.  It was a choice Junior and I made a few years ago, and it has worked well for us.  We save money on gas, because Junior no longer has to drive me back and forth to work.  The kids are doing great in school, and I truly believe it is because I am home to help with homework and projects and whatever else comes up.

But lately, I feel like I could be doing more with my life.  Junior suggested I look into Online College and see what is available for a woman like me, who wants to stay home and still make more money.  Ashworth College sounds like the perfect place for me, and I can take all my classes online.  i know a lot of people who are taking classes online, and they all say that having the ability to study and do the work at their own pace is a lifesaver, especially the ones who have kids.

One of my main concerns would be money.  I don't have a lot of options as far as tuition goes, so finding a school that is affordable is tough.  One of the things I love about Ashworth is that they include books and course materials in the tuition price, which research shows is 50% less than the average accredited online school.  They also offer zero interest financing. It's also nice to see that Ashworth College Featured by National Education Report "for its distinguished contributions to the advancement of distance education, both nationally and internationally.".

If you are like me and want to know what it's really like to go to school online, check out the Ashworth Video Gallery to hear what real students have to say about their experiences at Ashworth.  This has given me a lot to think about.  Starting school again is a huge decision, and I want to make sure that it is the right time for me to be taking this next step in my life.

Chocolate Covered Pretzels

I made these for the party Friday night.  I'm not sure if I am going to put them out for the kids, or have a secret stash for the adults.  Or I might just save them all for myself! lol!  I am having a lot of fun making these chocolates.  I just wish that the chocolate wasn't so expensive.  A package cost me almost $4 at Walmart, and it only made these 12 or so pretzels.  (I don't know the exact number, and I'm too tired to get up and look in the fridge)  I know I am going to get some for Christmas, too.  I am thinking homemade chocolates would make great teacher gifts, especially if I let the kids help make them.

What Is Best For Ryan

My son had ADHD.  He was diagnosed when he was in second grade.  He was eight at the time.  In a couple of weeks, he will be fifteen.  In the past seven years, I have had many, many conversations with his doctor (and family members) about the medication he is on.  At first, I was completely against Ritalin.   We tried several other medications, and the side effects were horrible.  On one medication, my son lost 10 pounds in two months.  Back then, he didn't have that weight to lose.  It was a new medication that hadn't been out long, and I wanted to try it first because it was supposed to be non-stimulating.  I don't think it is available anymore.

That is one of my biggest fears with new medications.  Sure, they are tested before they become available, but the long term side effects are not known.  We have all seen those ads on television by lawyers looking for people to join their lawsuits against drug companies.  Heck, there are even Depuy Lawsuits for people who had a defective hip implanted.

We ended up putting my son on Ritalin, and it was the best, and hardest, decision I have ever made.  He still takes it daily, and probably will take some dosage of it for the rest of his life.  I finally had to realize that I needed to do what was best for him, and not let my pre-conceived notions of Ritalin stand in the way.  Thankfully, Ryan has an awesome doctor who understood my hesitation, and who was willing to go the extra mile for my son.

SmartKnitKids Seamless Socks Review & Giveaway

Let me tell you a little something you may not know about Brandi...she hates socks.  It takes her about thirty minutes every morning to get her socks "just right" before she can even put her shoes on.  Her biggest issue is with the seam that goes across her toes.  She hates that.

I bought her the cutest pair of boots for school, and the first time she put them on she refused to wear them, because of her socks.  I knew when I was asked to review SmartKnitKids Seamless Socks that Brandi would be the kid to try them out.  I received two pairs; a black pair and a white pair.  The day after they arrived, i asked Brandi to wear her boots to school.  When she started whining about how her socks hurt her feet in the boots, I handed her the black pair and told her to see how they felt.  She loved them, and happily wore her boots to school.

About the socks:
SmartKnitKIDS Socks are 100% truly seamless; they have “No Seams to Bug Ya!”  A truly seam free sock is great for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder, Autism, or for those who simply cannot stand annoying sock seams.

As well as being completely seamless, our socks are also form-fitting.  This ensures that there are no wrinkles or bunches.  A form-fitting design makes SmartKnitKIDS perfect for infant socks.  No matter how much your little one may wiggle, the socks don’t come off.  SmartKnitKIDS Seamless Socks do not have a heal so they can easily and confidently be slipped on.  The heal-less design also keeps your child from out growing their socks as fast.

All I know is that Brandi says she has never worn a more comfortable pair of socks.  I was a little worried about how the tops would stay up since there is no elastic, but they were fine, as you can see in the picture:

You can buy these socks at www.smartknitkids.com.

SmartKnitKids has also generously given me two pairs to give away to two lucky readers.  Each winner will receive one pair each.  All you have to do to enter is follow me on Twitter and Tweet this giveaway.  Easy enough, right?  Just leave a comment with the link to your tweet. This contest is open to US residents only, and will run until 11:59 pm on Friday, October 29, 2010.

Good luck!

Beach Bound

My friend is moving to the beach.  She found an apartment to rent close to Myrtle Beach, and she plans on moving in a couple of months.  I think she is making a mistake.  She is moving to an area that she knows nothing about.  I told her she needs to do a little research before signing a contract, but she won't listen.  She is determined to leave this area, so she is taking the first apartment she found.

I think if I were to ever move to a location I know nothing about, I would do a lot of research.  I would go online and find out all the information I could about the area.  For instance, if I were looking for west palm beach real estate, I would Google West Palm Beach and read every article I could find.  Then I would visit the area myself. I would not commit to anything until I have seen with my own eyes how nice, or not so nice, the neighborhood is. I would let a professional agent help find the perfect place for me and my family.  I would never blindly move somewhere new.

My friend thinks differently.  She has never even been to this town she is moving to.  For all she knows, she may have committed to living in a run down, drug infested neighborhood.  She also sent the apartment manager a ton of personal information, without ever meeting her.  The whole situation gives me a bad feeling, but it's her life.  If she gets down there and regrets her decision, I will be the one saying, "I told you so.".

Chocolate

Ryan's birthday party is Friday night, and I am trying to get everything ready, which is a big undertaking because I am extremely lazy and tend to leave everything until the last minute.  Like cleaning...I will probably be cleaning like crazy woman all day Friday, even though I have all week to do it.  I guess you could say I work best under pressure.

Anyway, over the weekend I made these cute little chocolate pops.  You can't see it clearly in the picture, but the first one is a spider in a web, and the spider is green.  It's my favorite of all the chocolates I made.  I still have to make the chocolate covered pretzels....maybe tomorrow.  Or the next day.

Something We All Can Enjoy

Guest post written by Barry Reynolds

Anyone in my family would argue that the most important room in the house is the kitchen. We're big eaters and also do a lot of cooking, so that's why. So when for my birthday I decided that I wanted to do something that would pay off for all of our family, I decided to get our kitchen redone.

But I wanted to also make sure that I got the best deal that I could, so I did a lot of researching on the internet to find some people to do it. I found homeproimprovement and I got some pretty good quotes from them.

We got them to put in an island which gave us more cooking prep space so that we can all get in the kitchen and get our hands dirty together. Plus, it was nice to have the kids work at that station away from the hot stove where I worry about them being so close to because they're still pretty young. It's really great to have the extra space and now we're even more excited about cooking and baking stuff together.

What Does Your School Need?

This is such a tough and easy question.  There are little things I would love to see the school provide, like tissues and pencils, and then there are big things, like more reading material and computers.  My son's school needs more resources for helping kids who are falling behind because of learning disabilities, like ADHD (which he has) and my daughter's school needs new chorus gowns.  The ones the girls are wearing now are so old and worn out.  They are making due by repairing the gowns every year, and charging us parents a pretty hefty "rental fee".  These are just a few of the things that come to mind when I think about what their schools need.

If there are things your school needs, you can enter Bing's "Our School Needs ______" contest. Simply have your child (or teacher) write an essay about what his or her school needs(500 to 800 words), snap some pictures (3 to 5 photos), and then make a movie (max 3 minutes...this step is optional, but could be a lot of fun!).  Three schools will win $50,000, and one school will win the big prize, $100,000.  Any school, from K-12 grade can enter.  Check out the video to learn more about this contest, and how to enter.

You can find more information on how to enter here. They are accepting submissions until Friday, October 22, so go get creative, and enter your school!

My Girls...I Think!

I wanted to do a post about these chairs that we found on clearance at Walmart over the weekend, but then I went on picnik and started playing around with their Halloween decorations.  When I was finished, I had two monsters sitting in my new chairs!

Anyway, Junior found these chairs for $6.50 each.  They are normally $20.  We bought three of them (two pink, one blue) for the kids.  They are perfect for fishing, or for monsters to watch television in my living room.

Angelcare Spider Vein Treatment Review

I think all of us have spider veins somewhere on our bodies.  I have a very tiny spot on my lower shin, and was excited to try this spider vein treatment.   The system came with two creams, a massager, and literature.

About the product, in their own words:

Angelicare™ Ultra Nutricreme contains essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants required for healthy skin. It also contains emu oil to sooth the skin from abrasion. Elastin and collagen, natural building blocks, are added to help firm both the dermal and epidermal layers of skin.
After Angelicare™ Ultra Nutricreme is applied, the Angelicare™ Heat and Massage Skin Stimulator is utilized upon the target area. The heat helps with the deep penetration of the cream and stimulates the blood flow, bringing needed nutrients to the area.
The informational and inspirational pamphlet, “The Proper Way to Heal Thyself” is also included and is an informative guide to nourishing the skin. This information complements the Angelicare™ process and offers hints towards achieving health and total well being.

I have been using it for about a week now, and haven't seen much of a change.  I think that I need to give it more time.  The company doesn't give a specific timetable for results, mostly because every body is different.  I am going to keep with it, though.  I'll let you know when I start seeing results.

The Angelicare™ Spider Vein Treatment System Kit includes two, 2-ounce jars of Ultra Nutricreme, the Angelicare™ Skin Stimulator, and “The Proper Way to Heal Thyself.” Suggested retail price is $99.95 plus $7.95 for shipping and handling. You can find this product at www.InventHelpStore.com or to order, call Intromark directly at (800) 851-6030.

A side note....though not it's intention, I had Kasi use the massager on my back, and it was wonderful!

Make The Switch To Store Brand Formula

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of PBM Products. All opinions are 100% mine.

I'm a mom of three kids.  My oldest is going to be 15 in a couple of weeks, and some days I can not believe it. Where did my little boy go?  He's turning into such a wonderful young man.  There are some days when I think I might want to have another baby, but then reality sets back in and I realize what a crazy thought that is.  Babies are so expensive.  So are teenagers.  Having both in the house at the same time would probably send my poor husband over the edge.

If I were to become pregnant again, I would have to find ways to save money, and one of the easiest ways to do that would be to use store brand formula.  Most people don't realize that the store brand formulas have to meet the same FDA nutritional standards as the name brand formulas, so they are just as good for babies. They are also a lot cheaper than the name brand formulas. In fact, buying the name brand does not always guarantee your child's safety.  We all heard about the recent formula recall, and that was a name brand.  Maybe now is the time to switch to generic formula.

Parent's Choice is one of the store brands that many parents are now giving their babies.  Not only can it be found in Walmart and Sam's, it can now be found online.  You can find cases of ready to feed and powdered formulas on Walmart.com's Baby Center, and there is no additional charge to have it shipped to your house.  This is a great time saver for those busy moms out there who don't have the time, or energy, to go shopping.

I know I would use this service if I found myself with a newborn.  I'm almost 40, so I know I wouldn't have the energy to do anything, especially shopping.  So let's all hope that I am done having babies.

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Thanks for the post from Heriberto Sanders

My favorite children's Halloween Program would have to be “It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” I remember watching this program as early as five years old, and I am 28 now. Growing up watching this with my parents always brings back fond memories of spice cake and candy, getting ready to go out trick-or-treating with my friends, and just smiles in general. I remember that we watched it on a satellite TV from TVByDirect.com, and that it was so great because all of the family was around. I still remember how my mother would round up all of us kids and sit down in front of the television with popcorn necklaces. It really was a great time in my life.

My favorite part of this program is when Linus waits for the Great Pumpkin, which is kind of like the Santa Claus of Halloween, and no matter how many times people told Linus that the Great Pumpkin was a myth and not real, he never gave up faith, and that taught me a life-long lesson at a very early age. It is a program that I can recommend without reserve because it is good fun without the violence that seems to permeate today's culture. Take it from me: Watch this classic with your children, and create your own very fond memories of Halloween.

Stunned

Early this morning, I was watching the news like I do every day while the kids are getting showered and ready for school.  Our local news is big on "teasers", and I caught a blip about an upcoming story about an 82 year former sheriff who was found dead early this morning.  They showed the building where he was found, and I recognized it.

Now, some of you who have been reading this blog for years may remember that I used to run a produce stand for Junior's former father-in-law.  It was nothing more than a bunch of tables set up under a tent in his side yard, but he had some pretty good business.  It wasn't in the best neighborhood, and I was always nervous when I was there alone.  Right across the street from where I sat was this garage, where an old man sat trying to sell cars and all kinds of other stuff,  I don't even know how to describe it other than, maybe, collectibles.  Most days, he would walk across the street and sit with me for awhile, talking about everything and anything that was on his mind.  It made me feel safe knowing he was right across the street when I was there alone.

This is the guy who was found dead, in that garage.  And they say it is "suspicious".  Apparently, when he didn't come home last night, his family called the cops, and they went to his garage and found him dead.  So sad.  He was the sweetest man, and I can not imagine why someone would kill him, except maybe to rob him.  But, the cops aren't giving out any details.  They are just asking the community to phone in tips.

I hope they catch whoever did this, and make him (or her) pay.

Have You Thought About Christmas Cards Yet?

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Stonehouse. All opinions are 100% mine.
I mentioned in a post the other day that Christmas is only two and a half months away.  I am starting to panic a little bit, because I have just begun to shop, and I still have so many things to buy.  My goal is to get as many things on each kid's list as possible, without going broke.

I am also trying to decide what type of Christmas cards I want to send out this year.  For the past couple of years, I have sent out plain cards, without pictures.  Last year, my sister told me that if I am not going to send pictures of the kids with the card then there is no point sending out cards.  I thought this was a little odd, but she said that the pictures are what she looks forward to the most.  I always thought it was the sentiment behind the card.  You know, the fact that I was thinking of her and wishing her family a happy holiday season.  She's lucky I don't send her some business christmas cards
this year!

I am going to do what I want, of course, and that will probably be sending out cards without pictures.  I usually pick cards that are a little funny, as opposed to the serious, religious ones.  I love this card:
20022pk-funny
The reindeer are going to use a plunger to get Santa out of the chimney!  That is awesome!  I also like this card, and it would make my sister happy because it's a picture card.   With both of these cards, I can have whatever message I want printed on the inside for a small fee.  I love this option, because sometimes I think I have found the perfect card, only to realize that the message inside is horrible.  They also have personalized envelope you can buy (for only $3 per pack of 13), and for an additional small fee, you can have an image printed on the envelope.  I love this!  It's the perfect way for your card to stand out from the rest.

I guess I am going to try and get a decent picture of the kids.  If I can't, I'll be sending out plain old Christmas cards, and my sister will just have to deal with it.

Walk To School Challenge

I took this picture on the first day of school back in August.  A lot of people commented about how dark it is outside.  This morning, it was even darker.  I can't wait until we fall back so that it is a little lighter outside at 6:20 am when we head to the bus stop.

Last week, Brandi came home from school all excited because October is International Walk To School month.  Unfortunately, not only the darkness, but the lack of sidewalks and winding roads will keep us from participating.  (it's also pretty far to walk to her school, even during the day)  To make up for this, last Wednesday Brandi's teacher had the kids walk the parking lot for recess.  This teacher is all about going "green" in the classroom, too.  The first day of school, every kid in Brandi's class found a reusable plastic water bottle on their desk.  It was a gift from the teacher.  She didn't want the kids bringing disposable water bottles to school.  I think this was a great idea.  It also helps to keep class disruptions to a minimum, because the kids aren't constantly getting up to use the water fountain.

The kids and I do walk to the bus stop every day, which is a pretty good trip up the block.  I wish I could walk them to school, but it's just not possible.  But if you feel safe walking your children to school, you should enter Green Works Walk To School Challenge.  It's easy to sign up.  Just visit Green Works Facebook page and "like" it, then click the Walk To School tab.  You will find the form you need to sign up your family to help your school win one of five $5000 grants.  Simply walk to school every day and record your footsteps.  The schools with the most footsteps will win the grants.

Make sure you check out all the wall posts on their Facebook page, too.  I found a bunch of tips for making my home "greener", as well as encouragement to get my family more active.  I have come to realize that there are little things we can do to get moving, and in the long run, the little things add up.  I want my family to take those little steps in the right direction, and hopefully one day soon we will be taking big steps, getting healthier.

What Do The Chinese Know?

We were eating at a Chinese restaurant recently, and on the table they had those paper placemats that have the Chinese Zodiac on them.  Of course the kids needed to know when Junior and I were born so they could read what it said about us.

I am a rat.  According to the menu, I am:

Ambitious yet honest.
Prone to spend freely.
Seldom make lasting friendships.
Most compatible with Dragons and Monkeys.
Least compatible with Horses.

Do you want to guess what Junior is?

That's right.  He's a Horse.  According to the menu, he is:

Popular and attractive to the opposite sex.
Often ostentatious and impatient.
Needs people.
Marry a Tiger or a Dog early.
Never marry a Rat.

The kids thought this was hysterical!  I pointed out to them, though, that Junior and I have been together for almost 16 years, so the Chinese must be wrong.

At least they make good food.

New Bedding

A couple of weeks ago, Kasi and I rearranged the furniture in my bedroom.  When we moved into this house, Junior didn't put the rails under my bed because they were metal, and they needed some padding before they were put on the floor.  My box spring and mattress have been sitting on the floor for the past eight months, and I am ready for him to get the bed put together.
I really want to redo my room, and since I am not allowed to paint the walls, the best way to change things up is to change the curtains and bedding.  I found this black and gray New Bedding by Veratex, and I love it!  Right now I have a leopard print comforter on my bed, and it is getting pretty thin.   If you know me at all, you know that black is one of my favorite colors, but I think an all black comforter set would be too dark.
I also found this turquoise and brown New Bedding by Triangle Home Fashions that I like a lot. My furniture is a light wood, so the brown would match it well.  I also like the little splash of color the turquoise provides.  I would get curtains to match the turquoise, too.  The cream color lightens up the comforter, too, which is nice for a bedroom.

If I really want to add color, I could choose from a variety of Chenille & Matelasse Bedspreads.   I love the solid burgundy one, but I am afraid that it would make the room darker than it is.  I wonder how it would look if I got some cream colored pillow shams to go on the bed with it.  That would probably lighten it up.

Luckily, I have until after the first of the year to decide.  We won't have the money for any room re-dos until after Christmas.

Win A CSNStores Shopping Spree

I absolutely love CSNStores.  You can find just about everything you can think of.  I really want a new blender or food processor (I can't decide which) so I entered Anna's giveaway.  She is giving away a $75 shopping spree to CSNStores, and I really want to win. You can enter for yourself here. I see these CSN giveaways all over the blog world, and I have never won one.  Yet.  Let's hope luck is on my side this time. :)

My Dream Bathroom

Have you ever seen those showers that have jets positioned at different heights so that you are getting sprayed from all over?   I can't even begin to imagine how awesome they must feel.  If we ever decide to remodel our bathroom, that's the kind of shower I want.  I was looking on www.betterbathrooms.com and found that one in the picture, and I am seriously drooling over it.  It has six jets that shoot water from the sides as well as a hand held shower head that has several different spray modes.  I can just imagine how relaxed I would be after a shower in that.

I would also want a jacuzzi tub in my bathroom, that is not necessarily wide, just deep.  I want to be able to sit in it and have the water cover my shoulders. The way our bathroom is set up now, we could easily remove our garden tub and shower stall and put both of the new shower stall and jacuzzi tub in.  I wonder if our landlord would mind?

Of course, we would have a regular tub/shower combo in the other bathroom for the kids to use.  I mean, I wouldn't want to spoil them or anything.
